2008/11/22 Aben, WeiYu, MaoDi and XiaoMa on LiuXing in HOUSE

The main theme for this episode of LiuXing in HOUSE was men's fashion for the fall/winter season, featuring the two distinct styles: hobo/street-style daywear and bright sports-inspired daywear.

Aben and WeiYu were introduced first, with WeiYu donning the hobo style and Aben with the sporty look. They joked that WeiYu suited the hobo style perfectly with his 'mature' face! The stylist, who was invited for this episode, added that this style would also suit a bearded face, haha.

Firstly, they elaborated on the hobo style and MaoDi was introduced as the model for this look. Similar to WeiYu, MaoDi wore an Afghan scarf (also known as the crochet/dishcloth pattern scarf, as its pattern resembles that of a teatowel), which is a distinguished accessory of this look. RongJia (容嘉) also mentioned that Afghan scarves now come in a brighter array of colours, instead of the standard, darker coloured patterns (often worn are combinations of black, white, grey and navy).

On a side note, Afghan scarves are a unisex item, so I will also translate the stylist's directions on how to wear them. The stylist demonstrated the simplest way to wear the scarf, which is to fold the scarf once diagonally, into a triangle, and then to drape each end around the neck and over the shoulder.

The focal point for the hobo style is soft, flowing fabrics. Significantly, MaoDi demonstrated how unconventional ways of buttoning jackets (i.e. buttoning into the wrong buttonholes, on purpose) can add to the layering effect, distinctive of the hobo style.

There is also more of a focus on androgyny this season, with unisex leggings or thermals being a fashionable feature. An interesting way to match baggy shorts, 3/4 length pants or pants with the legs rolled up, would be to wear bright or quirky coloured leggings/thermals underneath.

A feature of the hobo style that particularly suits MaoDi is the large, soft fabric cardigan. MaoDi also stated that he likes to buy clothes from Japan as the looser cutting that is fashionable there especially suits his skinny frame. Furthermore, MaoDi introduced some round collared long-sleeved t-shirts from Japan and has a liking for grey t-shirts and jumpers, as MaoDi believes that the colour grey makes him look more rounded. MaoDi also expressed the desire to be 'fatter'!

Next, WeiYu introduced some cotton fabric pants and revealed that AoQuan likes to wear them with high-top sneakers. WeiYu also commented that AoQuan does look quite 'shuai' this way, which led him to be teased for admiring AoQuan's dress sense and caused him to go red in the face. :P

To avert his minor embarrassment (hehe), WeiYu explained that he likes to wear cotton pants to dance in, becuase they absorb sweat well and are also warm. WeiYu was then urged to try on a pair under some baggy shorts and all agreed that he suited these pants nicely, as they further elongated his figure. WeiYu added that he wouldn't be scolded by AndyGe if he was dressed like this, because AndyGe often tells him off for being under-dressed.

After WeiYu's segment, XiaoMa entered by riding a bike and exhibited his fresh, sporty look. Headphones were also highlighted as an important accessory that could give one's face the illusion of being thinner, and they all joked that they would be suitable for YeShou to wear.

XiaoMa joked that Aben's sporty look was weak compared to his, but then MaoDi pointed out that XiaoMa had actually bought the stripy jacket Aben was wearing, for himself!

XiaoMa also expressed a liking for the checkered lining on the inside of the bright yellow jacket he was wearing. I had never thought of this before and I found it quite clever how you can fold the sleeves up neatly like cuffs, to be able to reveal the patterned lining.

As jackets and windcheaters were proclaimed by the stylist to be a fundamental part of the sporty look, Aben introduced a colourful, bright jacket that can unzip into halves and where each half can be zipped up with a different coloured half, to form interesting combinations at the individual's whim. Thus, if you buy two or more jackets, then you will be able to mix'n'match the halves. Aben also pulled another of his distinctive cold jokes by pointing out that you can wear half a jacket on warmer days.

Overall, this was an interesting episode, with some conventional and interesting ideas, and Aben, XiaoMa, WeiYu and MaoDi all received a decent, detailed segment to talk.
